Newt Gingrich leads Mitt Romney among Republicans, but he is the weakest of the Republican candidates tested against President Obama, according to an NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll released Thursday evening.
Gingrich leads Romney 37 percent to 28 percent nationally among registered Republicans likely to vote in the primaries; Rick Santorum is in third with 18 percent, and Ron Paul is fourth with 12 percent.
Gingrich has built its advantage by consolidating the heart and soul of the Republican Party: very conservative voters, the South and the Tea Party.
Though Gingrich is the preferred candidate of GOP primary voters, he performs the worst of all Republican candidates tested against Obama, including Santorum.
advertisement"Gingrich is Goldwater," said Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted the survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff. "In the general election, Gingrich not only takes down his ship, he takes down the whole flotilla."

Obama, however, beats Gingrich by a whopping 18 points, 55-37 percent, expanding the president’s 11-point lead a month ago.

I found this in this morning's paper:
"presidents dip that low after they lose a war or before they get impeached. Newt Gingritch starts out there."
(Rich Lowry on several polls that show Gingritch's favorability ratings in the 20s)

Niiiice,
I'm starting to worry that Nute might backslide.
Either way Romney isn't going to beat Obama head to head. Not when the rest of the truths come out.

The "Elephant in the living room" is Romney being a Mormon. If he were a mainstream Christian, he'd have easily won in S.C.
However, Conservatives will vote for Romney over Obama in the general election. That's how hate works.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not 100% happy with all that President Obama has accomplished so far and disappointed in a few he hasn't.
While mainstream Conservatives may vote Romney I'm not holding much faith in that.
In his first election many like myself didn't allow our opinions be known until it was time to vote. I'm in a rural, mostly redneck community and surprisingly the KKK is not welcome here. Even more surprising is the fact that our county was split 50/50.
I don't see these folks allowing a Mormon a chance at the White House he really grates hard against the Baptist morals around here. Lets hope that rings true for the rest of the Nation.

As a third generation Arizonan, I can tell you that the voters of old AZ. weren't very conservative - as we understand the meaning of the word today. Most of our politicians were Democrats, and so was the populace.
Only AFTER the influx of midwesterners (and big business) from Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska and other cold climes, have the politics moved to the right. Even Barry Goldwater had to wait for the influx of new voters in order to win an election, and even then, he was not like the conservatives of today. They'd call him a "RINO". In fact, when asked in 1986 (I think) what he thought of the hard-line conservatives running the state party, he replied: "I don't give a damn WHAT they do! They can go to hell!"
It is very clear that Gingrich and Romney are out to destroy The International Bill of Rights and a President who has won a NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. Incredible !

I think it's pure jealousy they are starting to realize they can't hold a candle to him.
